As a PMHNP student, I intend to learn more about and utilize holistic nursing theory and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as a practitioner because a sick person is not just their illness.
Recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and social context is critical in restoring health to the whole person. Treatment is a collaborative process. We will start by cultivating a therapeutic relationship, which continues to the end of care.
As someone with a well-rounded foundation of education and experience in psychology and nursing, I can combine disparate knowledge, including empirically supported practices, patients' experiences, and cultural practices, to create a unique treatment plan that serves the patient's unique needs. There are a large number of peer-reviewed studies supporting the efficacy of CBT. This modality uses various short-term exercises such as exposure therapy, biofeedback, relaxation training, etc. Almost all reported studies have shown a significant positive impact on a wide range of populations and conditions with this modality. CBT is even more effective when it is tailored to a patient's needs and combined with appropriate medication.
I earned my BA in Psychology from the University of Maine Orono. After earning my first degree, I worked as an MHRT-C and then as a teacher at a school for children with autism spectrum disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders. I went on to earn a second bachelor's degree from the University of Maine at Fort Kent in nursing. I'm currently working as a psychiatric nurse on crisis units. When I complete my practicum this year at Walden University, I will be a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) focused on the care of our underserved psychiatric population.
I will be shadowing other clinicians, but may eventually see my own clients. Contact Leanne Snowman LCSW leanne.snowman@gmail.com to learn more.
